From the first time I saw it, I loved this prop. So, spending a few days slaving away in Illustrator and Photoshop, combing through screenshots and reference photos, I recreated the label and sleeve exactly (many thanks to Dave for getting me info on some of the fonts!). I then spent some time in Audacity mixing down individual tracks from the soundtrack of the episode with a full recording of the song--Reaper Man by Martin Yarbrough--to recreate the appearance of the Devil on the record, along with some of Willie Cole's terrified screams (which get quieter as he moves away from the mic in his terror). |
Rather than leave the B-side accurately blank, I chose to put a little Hellblazer Easter Egg. But you'll have to be one of the 4 people other than me who have one of these if you want to know what that is. Sorry.
I made 5 of these total, 1 for me and a few more for friends. I also made some non-playing versions, which are just sleeves and labels which I have applied to very old 10" records, from the general period this record is supposed to be from. And I have to say, even without the ability to play Reaper Man, those look great because they're so authentic. 5 of those were made, as well; mostly for friends.
I'm really happy with how this turned out. I'm also extra-happy that I had it all done and my pressing ordered within two weeks of the episode airing. Meanwhile, the folks over at the RPF are still struggling to even get the label done.
